Preventing False Spam Reports

Reportspam2 Jupiter Research did a survey a little while ago, where they asked people how they "unsubscribed" from emails they receive. About 12% of the respondents said they clicked the "spam button" in their email application. Ouch.

Apparently, a lot of people think that the "spam button" is just a convenient, safe way to unsubscribe, or "file away" the junk mail they receive (whether they signed up for it or not). But they have no idea that when they click those buttons, a report is often sent to their ISP, who then forwards it to the email sender as an "Abuse Report." If enough of these reports are generated, the sender's emails get blocked.

So if you're an email marketer, you need to be prepared for spam complaints, and you need to know how to prevent them. That's why we posted this article on the MailChimp website:
